Welcome to Nooks and Crannies online presence! This is my first post on what will hopefully be my depository of random thoughts about music.
First up, swearing on the radio. It's a big no-no, but a lot of good music has curse words. If you get caught playing a swear word on the radio, it's possible that the FCC will sue the heck out of you, and then you won't be allowed on the air. And you always have to think ahead, or it's possible that the wrong word may just slip out of your mouth.
Unfortunately, much of the music I listen to has cursing in it, which makes it difficult to play on the air. I have to go through the lyrics of each song to make sure it's clean. One swear word on a catchy tune means that that catchy tune isn't going to catch any air time. And that means I have to find another song to play. If possible, I try and play a song from that album, but sometimes it's just not possible.
What's weird is that the artists and labels who supply music to the radio station don't typically send safe for airplay albums. Which means that we can't air their tunes.
Artists and labels, if for some weird reason you're reading this blog, always send safe for airplay albums! Yes, I don't like clean albums, and if I go out and buy an album, I'll never buy a clean album. But this isn't about me and my private listening, it's about exposing new music to new listeners, and I can't do that if there is cursing in the song.
This is especially true for what I play: hip hop and indie rock. The young people love to swear. I love to swear. But not on the radio because I love being on the air more than dropping the f bomb.
I know that the artist wants to authentic and speak like they normally do, but if you want exposure over the air, lets keep it clean, okay?
